A joke:

A man is spending Sunday afternoon watching football when there's a knock at the door. He answers it, looks down and sees a snail. The snail says,"Would you be interested in a magazine subscription ?" The man, angered at this interruption of his day off, yells, No !" and kicks the snail, sending it through the air for parts unknown.

Two years later, there's a knock at the same man's door. He opens the door and there's the snail saying,"What the Hell was that for ?!"

Now scream for five minutes and if you're allowed go for a walk. Or spin class. Or, dare I suggest I highly physical experience involving marital bliss ?

As someone recently told me, EVERY day is a great day :)

This is a rant, written gonzo style. Which means I wrote it and did not go back and correct or change anything and it probably reads like one big pile of crazy:

If I ever said,"Every day is a good day," I must have been,' hopped,' up on Hershey bars ! I hope someone else said it.

Okay, I'm going from humor to being serious because I've had one too many 'hyper-optimists' tell me every day is a good day. Well, these people are delusional and while an overly positive attitude seems a good thing, it often creates a distraction from dealing with really tough issues. I also think it gives them hope that if they own a chihuahua that some day it won't be a little barking, yip dog in need of a shock collar, or, that Australian wine is actually quite good, if you give it a chance despite it having a 'kick' like a mule . Worse, they actually try to convince others that every day is a good day and that it's just a matter of positive thinking. It's brain candy.

Some days are awful, other days are great. The fact that there's a difference is why we appreciate the good times. Or, if this person really believes that every day is a good day, they are not doing much in the world, which is fine and at times I might just envy them. However, this does not detract from the fact that when I won a piece of business that prevented my Company from laying off people, was a very good day and the day I realized a friend was having an affair with her friend's husband, the same week of her daughter's birthday, was a really bad one. However, she did say the sex was,'amazing,' in a text message, so I guess there's an upside that your pal would appreciate. For my part, after getting that text message I needed to do something dramatic and flushed my cell phone down a toilet. Then, I went and bought a new phone. Now anytime anyone says the word,'amazing,' that text goes through my head, but I don't flush me cell phone.......anymore.

I've met my share of over enthusiastic people, also plenty of pessimists. They both are so committed to their absolutes that there's a huge mess in their lives, once you get below the surface. The toughest thing to be is a realist. You make the tough decisions and move forward. Here's an extreme example of an optimist: Japanese Samurai believed in fighting honorably and according to centuries old traditions. Then came the hand gun. They wanted nothing to do with it. Refused to fight with such things. They believed that a sword and fighting with honor would prevent the bullets from harming them. The Samurai, and their warrior optimism, are gone. But hey, I don't own a sword, bamboo armor or a firearm. With my luck, wearing bamboo armor would only inspire an attack by hungry Panda Bears. Whoops, I do own a sword, oh well.

I'd suggest trying to find balance, but I don't believe in that either. There is never 'balance' as we are always moving forward, a bit to one extreme or another. Yet, I've won battles where no one believed victory was possible and lost others despite being assured that success was imminent. Go figure

Ultimately, you simply find ways of moving forward. As the song goes,"People who do things are people who get things done." And, I'm always surprised at outcomes that are completely different than what I wanted and yet are better.

The taoists explain that there is no ,'good,' or ,'bad', there is simply what ,'is'. While I don't embrace that fully, it does have its value.

Sorry to go on like this, I've just met so many people that thought a positive attitude is all that's needed. When good things happen, it's often because of a lot of work. Sometimes dumb luck does happen, yet that's the 'good' that tends to be squandered.

Hey, I made a mistake here on the Tao. It's that there is no 'good' or 'evil' per se, there is simply 'perspective'.

While I can appreciate the concept generally, I cannot as an absolute. I can appreciate differing points of view simply being that, but I've seen too many things to not say, that at times, that a 'perspective' sure seems to have a whole bunch of evil in it.

Like the events that caused me to flush a cell phone, oh alright, two cell phones. Sometimes you just have to do something about something even if it's futile.

Two books to recommend:

The Condition by Jennifer Haigh
The story of a girl with Turner Syndrome named Gwen. She grows up never having her appearance change much from the age of eleven, despite growing intellectually into a full woman.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", by Stieg Larsson
This is a murder mystery and it is not for the faint of heart. It's also a series of films based on the three novels" The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," The Girl Who Played with Fire," and , "The Girl who kicked the Hornet's Nest".
